On 10th July 2013, Jim Robinson, a Consultant in Berwick Partners’ EMI practice specialising in Defence, Aerospace & Security, was delighted to be offered the opportunity to speak at an Employment Symposium organised by The Officers’ Association – providers of vital networking and job-search support to commissioned officers leaving the Armed Forces. Jim gave an introduction to how the commercial recruitment world is structured, where various firms are positioned in the market, and some advice and guidance on how officers might be able to work more effectively with headhunters and recruitment consultants.
The event was held in the extremely comfortable surroundings of the Army & Navy Club. Other speakers throughout the afternoon gave a very useful amount of insightful information into their own sectors, or a compelling account of their own personal experience of the transition from the military to civilian world. The current market is something of a ‘perfect storm’, as difficult employment conditions combine with the highest level of redundancies from the Armed Forces for many years. Events run by The Officers’ Association and other organisations play a crucial part in assisting individuals who are about to make the transition.
