On Thursday 19th October we hosted a round table dinner for Finance Directors from Midlands at Opus in Birmingham. Finance leaders from a broad range of industries including logistics, manufacturing, utilities and technology met to discuss various topics and challenges that were of interest to their businesses.
Overall the mood was optimistic; whilst the lack of certainty presented by Brexit is making trading conditions more challenging, most companies are not taking drastic steps and are still seeing strong performances. Optimising technology is high on the agenda with businesses taking a keen eye on challenger businesses arising from the gig economy, and looking at how they themselves can stay ahead of trends. The use of social media to engage with customers in a more personal and specific way is a challenge facing all companies. Whilst the use of Twitter and Facebook has been high on the B2C businesses agenda for some time, B2B companies are now making much more use of these channels to engage with their clients as well.
Naturally the current political situation was discussed at length. A quick straw poll was taken on “Trump. Can any good come of this?” and the essence of the very diplomatic answers was that he was a concern, but good could actually come of this. It was agreed that it had focused politics on the people and would hopefully encourage voters to really consider the impact of where they put their X in the future!
The dinner was a great success, allowing for lively peer-to-peer discussion and debate in a relaxed and informal setting. We run regular finance leadership dinners across Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds, if you are interested in attending future finance events please contact Amy Parkinson.
