Staffordshire County Council has appointed John Henderson as its new chief executive. Mr Henderson is currently the Officer Commanding the British Army in Germany and he will bring 30 years’ experience of providing the essential support services the British Army needs both at home and to its overseas operations.
His latest role in Germany has required an innovative leadership approach in a time of immense change, similar to many of the changes facing local government today. This has included maintaining business as usual operations, while ensuring forces personnel and their families have the support and opportunities they need, as well as contributing to the wider German economy
His appointment was ratified at a full council meeting today (11 December). Mr Henderson’s salary is £180,000 a year, plus up to 8 percent performance related pay linked to delivering results for Staffordshire people.
Philip Atkins, Leader of Staffordshire County Council, said:
“In looking for our new chief executive, we were searching for an exceptional individual to provide leadership to the county council and the county through immense, complex change in the years ahead.
“In John Henderson, we have found that leader, someone who understands and shares our ambitions for Staffordshire and its people.
“John will be responsible for over a billion pounds of annual expenditure focussed on benefiting the lives of more than 850,000 residents, and brings an extensive track record of financial innovation, commercial acumen and strong leadership.
“In particular John has the right leadership quality, skills and experience we need to work closely with our partners to share resources and ideas to benefit everyone in Staffordshire.”
John Henderson said:
“Leading in modern military operations has given me unparalleled experience in forming diverse teams with a common purpose, and in dealing with complexity and uncertainty. Staffordshire County Council has an ambitious strategy for improving the lives of its residents, and I look forward to bringing my skills and experience to contribute to this effort.
“I have met many partners and staff already and there is no doubt there is a shared passion to do great things for Staffordshire and its people, and I look forward to being part of that team.”
Staffordshire County Council’s interim Chief Executive John Tradewell will continue in the role until Mr Henderson takes up his new role in May.
