Annual Private Healthcare Breakfast 2016

Published: 1 July 2016

Berwick Partners, Odgers Berndtson and Odgers Interim hosted this year’s Annual Private Healthcare Breakfast this week in London. The second of its kind, the event proved a great draw for leaders in the independent healthcare community on a national basis to come together. This year saw a significant number of Chairs, Chief Executives, Chief Operating Officers and Chief Financial Officers from a broad range of healthcare providers.

Our guest speaker was Lord Patrick Carter of Coles who is a prominent figure in the UK having served on the Boards of US and UK healthcare, insurance and technology companies. He currently holds several Chair and non-executive public positions including Chair of the Department of Health Procurement and Efficiency Board. He has been reckoned to be the ninth most influential person in the English NHS.

It is perhaps not surprising therefore, given his business acumen, experience and prominence alongside the ongoing financial pressures in the NHS that it was Lord Carter who asked by the Department of Health to produce an independent report on operational productivity in English NHS acute hospitals which was published earlier this year. His findings identify far-reaching opportunities for improving productivity and efficiency across the NHS which could release around £5bn in savings over the next three to four years.

Lord Carter is an experience and successful businessman as well as an avid supporter of the NHS and believes that we have some of the best hospitals in the world, in terms of both quality and efficiency, all of which do something exceptional; however, it became apparent during his research that most trusts need help and support to understand what good looks like if the £5bn of efficiency is to be realised over the next three to four years.

The insight and perspective from Lord Carter prompted an interesting question and answer session and provided an opportunity for our guests to delve deeper into the topic.
