The Science behind the ‘Great British Pre-Occupation’ … HPC & Bigger Data!

Published: 29 October 2013

Amongst the countless news stories, sensibly advising caution about the weather, the BBC Radio 4 Today programme paused for the Weather Forecast. A perfectly British moment.

Long gone are the days of staring at seaweed, or a simple feeling in the bones. The accuracy and timing of forecast associated with these weather events is entirely down to exceptionally complex statistical analysis, utilising substantial High Performance Computing (HPC). At the very heart of this distinct specialism is ECMWF; the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts, providing critical data and analysis to indigenous Met Services.

We are presently recruiting a Director of Computing for them, a critical Board role driving the evolution of HPC services and the critical data archive.
