On Thursday 19th April, Odgers Berndtson and Berwick Partners hosted an informal networking dinner at Michelin Starred restaurant Simpsons in Edgbaston, Birmingham. With 15 senior HR Directors from around the West Midlands enjoying a fabulous meal, the focus of the evening was Executive Remuneration. The event was supported by guest speaker, Juliet Halfhead who is a Director in Deloitte’s remuneration consulting team specialising in executive compensation incentive design. Juliet brought technical expertise and valued insight of what she is experiencing through her role of working with CEO’s, Remuneration Committees and HR Directors.
Some of the more interesting thoughts from the evening were:
1) For the senior executive population, base pay is now only a small percentage of total compensation (averaging about 20%) and;
2) In the current market, executive bonuses are structured more towards being a retention tool than they are for the delivery of exceptional performance.
Steven Hester’s and Fabio Capello’s bonus arrangements for non-delivery of results were also debated!
