Why are we finding it so difficult to recruit at the moment??

This is the question that I hear almost daily from HR Directors, Directors of Talent/Resourcing and Managing Directors of a wide variety of organisations.  Many assume that as we still have high levels of unemployment that making their next potential hire will be easy.  Unfortunately their subsequent experience and hiring campaigns in the majority of recent cases don’t yield the desired results and/or anticipated conclusions.

Yes, the UK currently has almost three million people who are unemployed and looking for work, and certainly there are some very talented individuals who have been made redundant through no fault of their own actions; however most organisations will require a huge amount of good fortune and luck if, as is often the case, this is their hiring strategy.

Too often an organisation’s methodology and main candidate attraction is outdated, unimaginative and bland.  For instance, the days of simply putting an advert in the press or even online and waiting to receive the right applications have gone.  Today the high calibre individuals who organisations want to attract are nervous about moving, no matter how unhappy they may be with their current employer.  They are being almost continually bombarded by negative messages of ‘Double-Dip’ or ‘Euro Crisis’ which makes them understandably extremely cautious and risk adverse.

Therefore, the hiring strategies of any organisations who are seeking to attract the best individuals now more than ever have to be aggressive, comprehensive and imaginative.  This often involves a multi-faceted approach and dedicating the necessary resources required to identify, engage and hire the right individuals…..not simply looking on Linked-In!!

There is a high cost for recruitment in terms of time, resources, reputation and money so you don’t want to get it wrong!!  Therefore, as I advise all potential clients, you must have a comprehensive strategy, a compelling explanation as to why someone should join your organisation, and the right recruitment partner to facilitate and make this all happen.  Frankly if you don’t, in the current market and for the foreseeable future, unfortunately you will fail to attract and then hire the required calibre of individual.
