Odgers Berndtson & Deloitte Annual Midlands Board Dinner

Published: 17 June 2015

On 11th June 2015 in the idyllic surrounds of Stoneleigh Abbey, Odgers Berndtson and long standing partner Deloitte, were privileged to host a group of eighty business leaders from across the Midlands. As one of our most successful events, this place-marker dinner in the Midlands business calendar is in its thirteenth year. With previous speakers including luminaries of the UK and Midlands business communities such as; Sir Dominic Cadbury, Lord Deighton, and Nigel Stein, this year’s speaker was a similar coup. In high demand since her appointment as CEO of Severn Trent plc only fifteen months ago, our speaker, Liv Garfield, addressed the theme of the evening; “Post –Election Britain – Why leadership will matter”.

As the youngest and one of a growing group of female CEO’s in the FTSE 100, the audience were keen to hear her views on leadership, the rise of the regional economy, digital disruption and other topics as wide ranging as EU membership and infrastructure investment. Giving an enlightening, candid and engaging speech, Garfield is evidently a woman in control of her game and firmly in her ascendency.  The Fortune 40 under 40 nominated CEO kindly went on to take questions from the floor. Chaired by Baroness Virginia Bottomley, the questions received candid, informed and often challenging views on the place of leadership in making businesses perform to their potential.

While there is much talk of the Northern Powerhouse gaining momentum, it is clear from the sentiment and spirit in the room, that it would be unwise to dash up the country too fast. The heartbeat of the Midlands is firm and strong and remains a powerhouse all of its own.
