In recent months there has been a marked increase in demand for talent but declining availability of such talent. A recent report published by the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) highlighted the rate of growth of permanent appointments is at its fastest in over two years but the decline in candidate availability is the steepest for 16 months.  

These circumstances help to explain the continuing trend of a robust increase in salaries and remuneration; average starting salaries for appointments increased at the quickest rate in three months to the end of May 2017.  

Tom Hadley, REC Director of Policy, commented that ‘The challenges facing the next government are stark. Demand for individuals is the strongest in almost two years, but the number of people available to take those positions has plummeted.  Official data shows unemployment has dropped to the lowest level since 1975.  Plus skill shortages are causing headaches in many sectors’.

With this in mind, employers who want to successfully appoint the required talent to drive growth and take advantage of the current economic up-turn and rising confidence, will need to be pro-active and imaginative in their future recruitment campaigns.  They will also need to have a strong, transparent and candid relationship with a leading recruiter in the specific functional area and/or sector.
