Bridon is a global-leader in the design and manufacture of steel wire and rope solutions for the world’s process industries. Established in 1924 as British Ropes, Bridon is now owned by the manufacturing industry investment group Melrose Plc. It has annual sales of c£250m, and produces 90,000 tonnes of steel wire and 80,000 tonnes of rope per annum.
With an international network of manufacturing sites, the business has strengthened its R&D capability to enable it to develop the highly sophisticated engineering solutions that its customers require. To help the business become the pre-eminent player within its sector for ‘demanding rope applications’ the business needed to strengthen its R&D leadership team with the appointment of a highly effective Product and Process Development leader. The successful individual would play a critical role in the development of Bridon’s technical capability and its ability to meet the demands of its customers in the years to come.
The challenges of this assignment were three-fold: the need to find an R&D leader with a background in metallurgy; the need to assess the international steel wire and rope sector; and the need to identify a candidate who could deliver the change required, whilst having the potential to become the company’s Technical Director in the long-term.
By providing a thorough recruitment process that encompassed a targeted advertised selection campaign, approaching potential candidates amongst Bridon’s international competitors, and networking our existing contacts within the metallurgical sector, we were able to identify a strong choice of shortlist candidates. The successful candidate had a track record of leading R&D teams across the world within a speciality metals group, who was prepared to relocate to Bridon’s HQ to take up the role. This individual is has helped to create a world-class testing facility that has enabled the business to once again become a pre-eminent product developer.
