Our client, a highly profitable privately-owned manufacturer of industrial consumables, supply branded products to a worldwide customer base within the Automotive Refinish, Consumer Car Care, Industrial and Marine sectors. A strong R&D pedigree has enabled the organisation to develop market-leading and technically-advanced products, which it supplies through an international network of distribution partners.

We were instructed to search for a new Managing Director, to replace the outgoing incumbent. This individual had led the company very successfully for the previous seven years, and was respected for his strong leadership skills and commercial nous.

Reporting to the Chairman, and Board, the position had full P&L and strategic responsibility for the company, with the brief to drive growth in sales and profitability, through the effective leadership of the management team and the successful development of the company’s distribution network.

Our task was to find an individual with proven experience in a general management role with a strong sales and marketing track record that had the combined experience of working in a large blue-chip organisation, coupled with an understanding of leading an SME manufacturing business.

Incorporating proactive executive search with our large network of Managing Directors and CEO’s from the SME manufacturing world, we were able to approach and attract a strong long-list of potential candidates. In discussion with the client we focussed our approach on candidates who possessed well-developed international business management experience, and who had ideally led a company based outside of the UK.

We presented a shortlist of five candidates, some of whom offered directly relevant experience of our client’s market, with the balance from market-leading SME manufacturers. The result was the successful appointment of a Managing Director from a German-based manufacturer of branded consumables, who was prepared to relocate to the UK to take up the position with our client.
