Managing Director – OEM Component Manufacturer

4 April 2012

Part of a growing and acquisitive AIM-listed engineering Group, this autonomous business is a manufacturer of complex and bespoke components for OEM customers across the world. Recognised as a leader within its field, the company has ambitious plans for growth, and required a new Managing Director to improve its operational performance and to guide its expansion into new markets.

Reporting to the Group CEO, the role had full P&L responsibility for an autonomous ‘heavy engineering’ manufacturing site. A successful placement would enable the business to achieve its potential for profitable sales growth, through the effective leadership of the management team and the strategic approach to developing its customer base and markets.

A key element of the role would be to develop the operational performance of the business, through continuous improvement and lean manufacturing techniques, and introducing ‘best practice’ learned from other leading engineering sectors. Additionally the candidate would be required to develop and implement the commercial strategy to enable the company to win new customers in existing and new markets.

The candidate we were briefed to find was a proven Managing Director / General Manager with P&L experience, ideally gained within an autonomous manufacturer of specialist low-volume engineered components; someone who would thrive in a customer-facing role where long-term sales cycles and high-value projects are the mainstay. This person also needed to demonstrate a successful track record of growing sales and profitability through the development of existing and new customer markets.

With a strong track record of placing experienced General Managers in high-value engineering components manufacturers, Berwick Partners could draw on the experience of its own recent assignment history as well as that of Odgers Berndtson to find and attract a strong long-list of candidates from low-volume manufacturing organisations. This, coupled with a highly effective advertising selection strategy, led to the successful placement of a candidate with directly transferable experience and skills, and one the client believes will help achieve its ambitious plans for growth.
