Operations Director

Our client is a privately held international engineering group, active in precision engineering, manufacturing and distribution. The group supplies a worldwide customer base across numerous sectors including aerospace, construction, healthcare and power generation markets.

One of the group subsidiaries now requires a high calibre Operations Director with a continuous improvement mindset to drive manufacturing change. You will be integral to the future growth of the business, directly managing both the technical and production processes whilst ensuring compliance with all Quality and HSE requirements.

Reporting to the Managing Director, you will be a member of the subsidiary board running two distinct facilities, a specialist machine shop with very broad production capability and a process flow operation. You will:

  • Control all manufacturing related functions, people and facilities on site – focusing on operational efficiency, safety, quality, delivery and cost.

  • Utilise your lean training and expertise to provide direction for continuous improvement, ensuring the team are trained, developed and passionate to deliver efficiencies.

  • Full budgetary responsibility for the manufacturing function.

  • Ensure that Health & Safety and environmental standards, targets and objectives are met.

  • Drive customer satisfaction providing an agreed high level of OTIF.

  • Prepare and issue monthly reports to the Group Managing Director, attending Board meetings to discuss performance and contribute to the long-term strategy.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will be a dynamic, progressive people leader with deep lean knowledge and an appetite for challenging the norm in manufacturing. You will inherit a manufacturing operation that requires you to provide transformative lean leadership, whilst respecting the traditions of the past and the valued skills/capability of the existing team.

  • Ideally Degree qualified in a relevant subject, such as engineering or manufacturing.

  • Formal qualifications in lean manufacturing / 6 sigma - demonstrating you understand the tool kit, but equally how to apply it in a complex operation with both continuous flow and batch manufacturing processes.

  • Understanding of how to best utilise MRP/ ERP systems.

  • Knowledge of ISO quality and environmental standards.

  • Passion to solve engineering problems with the ability to be both hands on (understanding how machines and processes work) and strategic.

  • Experience of world-class manufacturing techniques, and the ability to apply this knowledge in a new environment.

  • Financially literate.

  • Collaborative, tenacious, honest and humble.

  • Able to command respect through skills, knowledge and personal attributes, communicating effectively at all levels within the organisation.

Additional Details

This role will be based in the North West, with an excellent base salary, car allowance, bonus, pension scheme, private health care and cash plan on offer.

The successful candidate will have the autonomy to drive operational effectiveness, and the potential to develop their P&L skills to be part of succession planning for Managing Director roles within the Group in the future.
