Director of Planning & Building Control– Belfast City Council – Salary: Circa £88k - £97k

Belfast is one of the most attractive cities in the UK and Ireland, a vibrant and energetic city with ambition to be a sustainable, connected city with an inclusive economy delivering high quality of life and service excellence to our citizens.

The Belfast Agenda is Belfast’s community planning framework, committed to the city and its long term success. It has been built by a partnership of organisations and is our shared agreement to work better together for the good of everyone who lives here. It is an ambitious inclusive vision for the future and a set of stretching goals for a better quality of life for all.

The Belfast Agenda is the city’s one strategic plan for the future, providing a simple and clear framework for bringing tangible benefits to everyone. It makes a clear link between social, economic and environmental issues, spatial planning, place shaping and regeneration. Shaping our city, driving growth and delivering on what matters to our local people and communities are at the centre of the plan. Like other places, Belfast has many challenges to face but the opportunity for us to make a difference to local communities and to lead city growth has never been greater.

We have achieved notable successes in recent years with multi- £billion investment in regeneration programmes across the city. At this incredibly important juncture for Belfast, as the City looks to the future after the Covid19 Pandemic, we are poised for further growth and success as we look to support, recover and revitalise our city.

As Director of Planning and Building Control you will play a critical and catalysing role in the transformation of the physical and social fabric of Belfast. Much work has taken place in recent years to create a Planning and Building Control directorate that is forward thinking and outward looking - seen as an enabler by the investment and development communities.

Your role will be to build on this work, bringing creativity and a focus on delivery that will ensure effective service delivery on the ground and that leverages the city’s position, ensuring a city that is fit for all our communities and one where stakeholders thrive and prosper.

This is a high profile and highly visible role and you will be the principal planning official in the City. We are looking for an innovative and passionate individual, excited by the opportunity to work in one of the most exciting, dynamic and complex social and economic landscapes in the UK.

We require a highly skilled professional, with significant experience of the planning system, who is commercially astute, a strategic, agile thinker and who will bring vision and innovation to the development and growth of our City.

Belfast City Council is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from all sections of the community.
