Newham is at the centre of many of Europe’s most spectacular regeneration and place making programmes. With new housing and new town centres at Canning Town and Custom House; London’s only Enterprise Zone at the Royal Docks and with one of the biggest council house-building programmes in the country, Newham is home to many of Europe’s most spectacular regeneration and place making programmes.
The borough will see the arrival of 5 new Crossrail stations with 37,500 new homes and 100,000 new jobs created by 2027.
Working with our Mayor and Chief Executive, and with a new Corporate Director of Inclusive Economy and Housing and a new Director of Housing, our Director of Planning and Development will play a central role in shaping Newham for decades to come. Together, you will ensure that all our communities benefit from the borough’s growth and employment and skills opportunities. We offer a highly skilled Planner a professional landscape unlike any other to work on.
We are looking for a talented leader who shares our commitment to putting people at the heart of everything we do. Come and help us build a community that supports, helps, protects and allows all our residents, but most notably our young people, to flourish.
As our new Director, you will lead Newham’s highly regarded planning function and related services and take overall responsibility for the development of appropriate planning policies and strategies for one of the UK’s most exciting and dynamic Councils.
This is a key role that will provide strategic leadership and operational responsibility for services at the forefront of helping shape and lead the successful economic and social future for Newham.
We are seeking an experienced Director of Planning & Development who shares our core values and will lead the organisation’s statutory planning and building control functions. With extensive local authority experience, you will provide strategic leadership on the development and implementation of our Local Plan.
You will be able to show impactful and innovative approaches that have enabled locations and communities to fully capitalise on their social, economic and physical infrastructure.
With a demonstrable track record in leading and managing relevant service areas, you will be confident in providing professional advice on planning related matters, supporting members, and maintaining the Borough’s exceptional performance in respect of both major and minor planning applications and appeals.
Currently working within either the private or public sector, you will bring significant experience of having worked across a wide range of planning scenarios, and be capable of providing confident, credible and insightful advice and guidance on high-profile, contentious and complex cases in one of the most dynamic landscapes in the UK. Reporting to the Corporate Director, you will be a member of RTPI, or eligible for RTPI accreditation, and have extensive experience and knowledge to enable enactment of the delegated functions of the Council’s Chief Planning Officer. You will oversee the delivery of an efficient and responsive development management service and convene and report to Planning Committees.
You will work closely with colleagues in Regeneration and Housing and have the resilience and skills to thrive in a highly visible, accountable and professional environment with confidence and experience to negotiate complex, high value development proposals to enhance the quality of the Borough as a whole.
This is an exciting time to be joining us as you will play a key role in delivering our ambitious strategy for housing and a dynamic economic development and planning agenda. We are looking for people who can embrace this and help us move towards a great future for everyone.
You will be warmly welcomed by a vibrant and thriving community where diversity is embraced and people of all ages, races and beliefs, speaking at least 100 different languages, get on well together.
