The University is currently seeking to appoint a new Head for the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences to provide bold and strategic leadership to the School. Reporting to the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the Head will be appointed with a substantive Professorial position and a Head of School position for a term of five years, renewable for a further two, and will be a member of the Executive team.

The School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at Plymouth is a successful and high-profile School, vital to the mission of the wider Faculty and University. The Head is responsible for leading the School and promoting excellence in all that it does, and s/he will determine the strategic direction of the School while influencing the wider University’s agenda. The role requires cross-faculty leadership to advance the overarching strategic agenda of the Faculty as determined in partnership with the Executive Dean.

The appointed individual will bring an impressive academic profile that resonates with one or more of the many areas of strength represented within the School. S/he will be a passionate educator and committed to the transformative nature of research-informed higher education, as well as the major role the University plays in the socio-economic and cultural fabric of the South West. The next Head of School will have the clarity of vision to shape the School’s strategy going forward, ensuring an excellent student experience, a high-impact research agenda, meaningful national and international partnerships, and the sound management of the School’s resources, faculty and staff.

This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week, the role will be for five years initially, with the potential to extend for a further two years, at which point the successful candidate will move to an appropriate substantive post.
