The Company

Established in 2015, the Oil & Gas Authority’s (OGA) role is to regulate, influence and promote the UK Oil & Gas industry with the goal of maximising the economic recovery of resources on the UKCS. A progressive and highly effective authority, the OGA works alongside both industry and government to achieve this while at the same time attract investment and jobs, helping to anchor valuable skills and expertise in the UK.

The OGA works closely with, but has operational independence from, their sponsor department – the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). The OGA Board is accountable for decisions and approving work related to the UK’s oil and gas exploration and production licensing regime, and ensure the appropriate governance and controls are in place for the organisation to achieve its goals. The OGA is largely funded by an industry levy and maintains offices in Aberdeen and London.

The Position

Based in Aberdeen and reporting directly to the Chief Executive, the Director of Operations is seen has one of the most visible and influential leadership roles in the industry, accountable for the strategic development and effective stewardship of the UK’s offshore Oil & Gas exploration and production.

With responsibility for overseeing MER UK being put into practice by all the license holders and operators of assets in the UKCS, from the encouragement of exploration interest through to the sanctioning of new projects and ultimately being accountable for the OGA’s role in decommissioning, the Director of Operations will ensure that operational efficiency and effective asset management is present throughout and will have a key part to play in the sector’s future success.

Leading a multi-disciplinary team, the Director of Operations will work with technical and commercial leaders to develop strategic plans for the UKCS, while encouraging and facilitating collaboration between Oil & Gas operators, government and other key industry stakeholders in line with the MER UK strategy and energy transition agenda; building strong relationships both internally and externally along the way.

The Candidate

Fully engaged in the industry with a career in leadership roles the ideal candidate will have significant experience in the Oil & Gas industry, with a deep knowledge and understanding of the whole Oil and Gas lifecycle from early exploration through to decommissioning. They must have a proven record of working with a range of Oil & Gas operators and other stakeholders, leading difficult or complex operational and commercial projects or challenges within the UKCS.

A true diplomat, with the ability to anticipate and proactively resolve disputes, command influence and ensure collaboration between parties with competing interests, the Director of Operations must show evidence of personal resilience and flexibility in their approach, the ability to make tough decisions and manage potential conflict when it emerges.

With proven personal leadership and credibility, the successful candidate must be able to engage, influence and command the respect of senior figures across the industry and other key figures, including Ministers and officials, especially within BEIS and HMT. The OGA are looking for someone with credibility and gravitas, capable of enhancing their reputation, making effective decisions and delivering at pace.

Remuneration

There is a competitive reward package for this senior appointment, reflecting the level of the role with in the Oil & Gas Authority. The position is based in Aberdeen with travel to London and occasionally overseas as required.
