Global Programmes Director - The Donkey Sanctuary
Sidmouth, Devon
Salary: Competitive

The Donkey Sanctuary has grown from a charity rescuing UK donkeys from neglect and abuse to an international animal welfare organisation transforming the lives of millions of donkeys and mules, and the people who depend on them for their livelihood.

The Donkey Sanctuary supports projects in countries across Africa, Asia, Europe and South America. Around the world, donkeys and mules support livelihoods, water access, the tourism industry and more, and yet their wellbeing is almost universally forgotten or maligned in legislation, policies, development programming and even in cultural practices. There are an estimated 50 million donkeys worldwide, and they are pivotal to the survival of some of the most impoverished and vulnerable communities on the planet. Our aim is to help them all.

An exciting and unique opportunity has arisen for a Global Programmes Director to lead in the strategic direction and facilitate the delivery of innovative, high-quality sustainable donkey welfare programmes, focused on impact and scale. These strategies will focus on three core areas: Donkeys in Industry, Rural and Urban Livelihoods, and System Strengthening.

The newly created Global Programmes Director will be a pivotal part in the delivery of these ambitious plans and success in this role will result in immediate and lasting change for donkeys, mules and the communities that depend on them.

The Role

• Develop world-class, high-quality programmes to transform the lives of donkeys all over the world and continually demonstrate the positive impact they have on human health and happiness.

• Collaborate with the Executive Director of Operations, the Chief Executive and other stakeholders to develop strategies and campaigns that dramatically reduce the number of donkeys suffering in the production of meat, milk and skins.

• Build effective and mutually beneficial partnerships and relationships with organisations in the international development and animal welfare sectors. Engage with institutional networks and donors ensuring the assessment, due diligence and compliance of Programmes align with the strategic aims of the charity.

• Provide strong management and leadership experience to a team of six, supporting the overseas teams to develop and deliver programmes that are aligned to the charity.

The Candidate

• Significant experience and knowledge of international multi-site programme delivery within the development and/or animal welfare.

• Experience of creating and managing complex strategic relationships collaborating effectively through shared objectives, in particular with international organisations, government agencies, academics and NGOs.

• Energy, drive and the ability to inspire a wide range of stakeholders; the intellectual capacity to motivate and develop a highly motivated multi-disciplinary international team.

• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with an ability to adapt styles for different audiences.
