Director of the Institute of Education
The University of Greenwich
Competitive Salary

Founded in 1890, the University of Greenwich is host to over 38,000 students spread across three world-class campuses, in striking locations within and around London. The University provides an exciting and vibrant environment for academics, graduates, and undergraduates alike, with a range of subjects that are regarded as being amongst the best in the country for student satisfaction, and research income that has doubled in the last five years. Under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor David Maguire, there are ambitious plans in place that include further capital development, greater investment in research, and an extension of an already flourishing international profile.

The University of Greenwich has a long history of education as a discipline, and testament to the quality of this provision was the recent Ofsted “outstanding” endorsement of Primary Initial Teacher Education. The Institute of Education is a new entity with a stated aim to become a Centre of Excellence in education. It brings together what were previously three departments into two, and further promulgates quality and innovation in teaching and research. There are four distinct elements to this strategy:

1. Outstanding provision in teacher education

2. Excellence in teaching and learning, enabling education to achieve the highest internal and external ratings

3. High-impact partnerships on the local, regional, national, and international stage

4. 3* and 4* research outcomes in the REF.

The role of Director is an exciting opportunity to provide overarching leadership to the new Institute, not least in terms of driving an interdisciplinary research agenda, whilst ensuring that there are opportunities for partnership development in London and beyond. As such, the University is very ambitious about the calibre of candidate they wish to attract. Naturally, a solid personal research profile, national and international networks are critical, and the ability to galvanise and deliver the opportunities that the new Institute presents. Finally, a genuine, infectious passion for education in all of its forms will be vital.
