There has lots been said about room for mutual improvement in relations between CIO & CFO, and the clear upside of improved relations between them. It is a chestnut of a topic which has seen a lot of daylight over the years. We all hope that the days of limbo-dance IT budget negotiation on ‘how low can you go’ are now passed. With the board seeking to drive growth and value creation the CIO/CFO dynamic has firmly put itself back on the table.
Below are a few of the interesting perspectives shared in other forums that we have found to be worth reading. Extracted from what would ordinarily be seen as IT Leadership specific sources are some CFO led perspective pieces:
Firstly a powerful infographic giving an accessible and credible view of ERP as Cloud based service: www.infographicsarchive.com/tech-and-gadgets/a-cfos-guide-to-erp-in-the-cloud
Next came a refreshingly contrite piece advocating collaboration not blame; a mature perspective on how to ensure business value is the priority outcome from distressed enterprise solution implementations: www.computerworld.com/s/article/print/9223853/When_ERP_is_botched_CFOs_must_act
The next piece to catch our eye was the following; a short perspective gleaned from a collective of CFO’s on their view of the role of a CIO. Commercial management, innovation and big picture value all loomed large; www.ciodashboard.com/leadership/the-cio-through-the-eyes-of-the-cfo
Collaboration and communication are central in these two articles; www.fiercecio.com/story/benefits-cio-cfo-collaboration/2012-01-11 www.baselinemag.com/c/a/IT-Management/A-New-CIOCFO-Partnership/
Certainly the debate will continue to go on, with consideration being given to every minute nuance of the CIO/CFO relationship. However, it is clear that there is a much improved willingness to work at collaboration and communication in search of real enterprise value. There will always be a tension within almost all aspects of a Board, but shared language, shared purpose and share outcomes are the foundation stone of business success in these deeply competitive times.
